Description

Film/TV adaptation confirmed before publication!

A new full-length novel by Ryu Jin-sang, winner of both the Korean Science Literature Award and the Moon Yoon-sung Science Fiction Literature Award.

“No matter how many times I witness the cold malice lurking in human hearts, I can never get used to it.”

In an era when those who deserve death and those who deserve to live again are brought into a life swap, an agent of justice embarks on a solitary quest for the truth.

Widely acclaimed for his extraordinary imagination and meticulous storytelling, Ryu Jin-sang returns with a richly atmospheric new world-building after his award-winning novel The Joseon Cyborg Chronicle. The story received an outpouring of praise from readers during its online serialization, and screen adaptation was secured even before official publication.

The story is set in a future world where the “conversion penalty” has been implemented: the life of a perpetrator is taken in exchange for the resurrection of a murdered victim.

Joo Seung-woo, an investigator in the Special Inspection Department of the Conversion Agency, one day interrogates Kang Byung-chan, a suspect in a series of serial murders. The suspect refuses to admit to the last murder until his death. Seung-woo, who has always been sharp and observant, grows suspicious—but all the evidence points to the perpetrator. In the end, Kang Byung-chan’s life is exchanged for that of Han Ji-hye, a lawyer who was brutally dismembered and killed.

Haunted by lingering doubts, Seung-woo continues to interrogate criminals awaiting conversion. In doing so, he witnesses all manner of absurdities in the world: victims’ families fighting in court over who deserves the next resurrection, attacking and belittling the deceased; people conspiring to commit heinous crimes just to obtain new bodies; the crimson scar marking Han Ji-hye’s body like an inescapable fate; and the remains of victims so damaged that even life exchange cannot bring them back. Gradually, he comes to recognize a chilling truth: resurrection is never the same as redemption.

Who truly has the right to decide who should die and who should live?

Trapped in a swamp of desire and lies, determined to pursue the truth and carry out absolute justice—can Joo Seung-woo stay true to his principles until the very end?

Clad in a novel sci-fi setting, this book presents profound philosophical questions about human nature. It does not impose answers but instead invites readers to think deeply—perfect for those who appreciate thought-provoking suspense science fiction.

Memorable Quotes from the Book

“To strip away the truth from the morass of desire and lies, and to deliver the most balanced justice—that is Joo Seung-woo’s mission, and what he does best.”

“This is a world where the dead can return. Even if everything has fallen apart, even if the world is shattered, starting over and moving forward is never too late.”
