Foreword
It’s been nearly five years since I graduated from university. I still remember the night before graduation: the six of us in the dormitory were all a bit restless, slowly chatting about where we’d go after graduation, what we’d do next, what the future would look like, and who would be the first to get married. Now, it seems as though some of those questions have found answers—but others haven’t yet. Take me, for example: After graduation, I went to Hangzhou and landed my first job, fully expecting to make big strides in my career. But just eight months later, I left the company. In my view, the rigid, fixed schedule of office work was stifling my creativity, yet I had no choice but to compromise in order to make a living. This constant tug-of-war between my creative aspirations and practical needs was deeply unsettling. Eventually, I decided to become a freelance illustrator. Being a freelancer comes with risks, but thankfully, I stuck with it. My deep love for drawing has helped me overcome many challenges in life, giving me the confidence and strength to face whatever the future may bring.
Yang Huahua is a character I created based on myself, a reflection of my own life. I’m used to a steady, predictable routine, but when I create, I thrive on change and innovation—and these two sides of me don’t conflict. I can happily eat the same meals for a week or even half a month, but I can’t stand producing the same kind of artwork over and over again.
Drawing brings me immense joy. It feels like a form of recording—capturing my wild, imaginative flights of fancy, my ever-leaping thoughts, my ever-changing emotions, and every moment in life that moves me deeply. One of the main purposes behind creating this comic book is to capture those small, seemingly insignificant moments in everyday life and preserve them through my art. The stories in this book are things that many people have experienced—or perhaps forgotten altogether unless they make a conscious effort to recall them. Yet it is precisely these little moments that make our lives rich and colorful. It is through these small experiences that our inner world grows fuller and more vibrant, enabling us to see ourselves clearly in this bustling, chaotic world—to believe in ourselves and to love ourselves unconditionally.
We all long for a quiet corner of our own, a place where we can simply be ourselves and let go of our worries. So why not set aside your troubles right now, open this comic book, and let these funny, heartwarming, and healing stories gently warm your heart?
