Author Introduction

Foreword

Editor's Note
What is the significance of reading in the AI era?
The emergence of ChatGPT has caused a global sensation, symbolizing the arrival of the artificial intelligence (AI) era. The drastic changes it has brought are changing people's living habits, impacting people's imagination of the future, and leading human history to turn a new page. With unprecedented depth and powerful force, AI is urging us to rethink the value of humanity — this is neither good nor bad, but a natural process of history and an inevitable stage of technological development.

From oral tradition to written records, books have not only made knowledge widely spread but also become the spiritual food of humanity. However, this enduring need has gradually been broken, and the social reading atmosphere has shown a downward trend. What is the reason?

Is reading still worth encouraging? What is the significance of reading in the AI era? Will the form of reading change in the future? This book collects interviews with 18 experts and scholars from different fields, who selflessly share the significance of reading for the present and the future. During the interview process, the editors benefited a lot. Here, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the interviewees. They not only took time out of their busy schedules to communicate but also made full preparations for the interviews. The content shared is rich, three-dimensional and highly inspiring, and also reminds us of the crucial power of reading that is easily overlooked because it is taken for granted.

This book is not a book of answers, but hopes to help readers discover problems and trigger reflections. When reading, if you agree with the interviewees' views and resonate with them, it is like finding a like-minded friend, which is naturally a joy; if you disagree, but still read patiently and digest carefully, you will experience a deeper process of thinking and internalization, and realize the "power of slowness" of reading; if you still want more after reading and arouse the urge to read, it is a testimony to the charm of reading, and it is human curiosity that drives us to embark on a new journey of exploration again. These are the editors' expectations for this book.

Finally, the more important significance of this book is to hope that the seeds of reading will continue to spread, allowing the next generation to continue to enjoy the joy of reading. Dear readers, what are you waiting for? Let us take action and pass on the power of reading!
