Description

Winner of International Michelangelo Buonarroti Prize – Special Youth Book Award
Like many children, Gianni and Claudia think math is too difficult, but Grandpa Beppe will change their minds: the two will learn to have fun with simple operations, casting out nines, and even multiplication tables.

Beppe is a retired teacher who spends his time with friends in the mountains, but in the afternoons, he looks after his two grandchildren, Gianni and Claudia. The children attend primary school and, like many others, find math difficult. Grandpa sparks their interest by introducing mathematical games and ancient multiplication patterns, while his shepherd friend, Gigi the Sharpshooter, teaches them multiplication tables using their fingers. Even the mystery of casting out nines for multiplication is revealed with patient grace by Grandpa Beppe. The children are amazed and can’t wait to tell their friends what lies behind this and other mathematical rules.
