Lyudmila Petrushevskaya is one of the most talented and outstanding contemporary Russian writers. The publication of each of her books is a significant event. In this collection, 5 works (one-third of the total content) are being published for the first time, while several others were previously scattered across different books, mixed with “ordinary” prose. There are not many collections of Petrushevskaya’s plays, but when her theatrical works are “presented collectively,” their dramatic charm—especially that of Lyudmila Stepanovna’s plays—shines with unique luster and can be perceived most appropriately by readers. Therefore, this book is a must-have both for fans of Petrushevskaya (and I count myself among them) and for those who wish to be introduced to her unique theatrical creations.

This collection is almost perfect. The included works are highly engaging, skillfully blending old and relatively new pieces. Once again, it excellently demonstrates the theatrical talent of Lyudmila Petrushevskaya, a versatile genius.

It is also worth mentioning the book’s cover—bright, bold, and free from any vulgarity.

In conclusion, highly recommended!

Description

This unique collection of plays by Lyudmila Petrushevskaya is released to celebrate the author’s receipt of the Golden Mask Award, one of the world’s most influential contemporary theater awards.

Adventurous and magical, post-modernist and socially acute—all of Petrushevskaya’s plays are as easy to read as excellent prose.

The author rarely releases new works, and this is one of them!

Lyudmila Petrushevskaya’s collections of plays are a rare and significant phenomenon. For nearly 50 years, her plays have existed in the theatrical world. Initially, the Soviet authorities banned them, but a play can still be staged in a small room—and that is exactly what directors did. Later, her plays spread across the country and to many countries around the world (with no information available about Africa). The playwright Lyudmila Petrushevskaya has been awarded the State Prize, the Stanislavski Theater Award, and the Golden Mask Award, and currently, 6 of her plays are running in Moscow alone. Some people believe her plays are difficult to read, but this is not the case. Unlike novels that start with lines like “It was a late July evening,” in a theater, the audience does not know where everything is taking place or who is who for the first 5 to 7 minutes. However, surprisingly, readers gradually construct the stage sets for themselves, visualize the characters, and become the audience of the play they have created in their own minds.

Open this book. Lyudmila Petrushevskaya’s theatrical world is now yours.

Author

Lyudmila Stepanovna Petrushevskaya (May 26, 1938)

She is one of the most critically acclaimed contemporary Russian writers. She has been honored with awards from almost all major Russian literary journals, numerous other literary prizes, and the Russian State Prize.

The granddaughter of a renowned linguist, she initially did not plan a literary career. Instead, she chose journalism and enrolled in the relevant faculty at Moscow State University. Her early writing experiences included scripts for student skits and theatrical productions. She worked in television and major print media of the Soviet Union for many years.

Lyudmila Petrushevskaya’s first short story was published in the early 1970s, but her next publications did not appear until the perestroika period a decade later. Soviet editorial offices during the Brezhnev stagnation simply could not afford to publish prose dealing with such acute and relevant social issues.

At the same time, the writer’s plays were staged by several amateur theater groups and later made their way onto the repertoires of official theaters.

Lyudmila Petrushevskaya has created more than 10 plays, numerous collections of short stories and fairy tales, 2 novels, and screenplays for many popular films.
