Review

“Life differs in form, yet all life is equal. Every life, no matter how brief, is precious – worthy of celebration and enjoyment. 'The Sun and the Mayfly' serves as a profound introduction to life philosophy for young children. I am delighted to see such an artistically unique and intellectually substantial work emerge from China's original picture book scene.”

Description

This story follows a little mayfly's life journey through her single day of existence – from birth to maturity. On this day, she meets the sun and befriends various creatures in nature. Guided by the sun's constant presence, she spontaneously and actively explores the vibrant world around her, discovering the cycle of day and night, the turning of seasons, and phenomena like wind, frost, rain, and snow... As sunset approaches, carrying one beautiful wish in her heart, the mayfly's life concludes in a blaze of glory. The next day, nature gives birth to new mayflies...

The story brims with contrasting tensions – the ephemeral mayfly versus the eternal sun, the joy of birth alongside the sorrow of passing, the insignificance of individual life against nature's abundance... What makes the story precious is its refusal to dwell in melancholy; instead, it conveys a vast spatial consciousness, a profound temporal awareness, and an enlightened perspective on life's transitions.
