Feature

A Sci-Fi Graphic Novel Tackling Today’s Hottest Environmental Issues

Hello, Forest Goodluck is a sci-fi graphic novel that imaginatively explores the future changes to Earth’s environment caused by pollution. The author sets the story in the near future of 2452, emphasizing the urgency and crisis of environmental issues. In an era where reality feels more surreal than science fiction, environmental problems strike close to home. The premise—where glaciers melt due to global warming and extreme weather events, submerging continents and forcing humanity to flee Earth—feels all too familiar. The graphic novel vividly depicts various environmental issues, such as plastic monsters formed from years of accumulated waste, landslides, and desertification caused by reckless deforestation. Amidst these changes, Hello, Forest Goodluck quietly conveys the message that Earth can heal and coexist with humanity only when the hearts of both nature and humans are in harmony.

A Rich Worldview and a Vibrant Cast of Characters,Selected for the Korea Manhwa Content Agency Diversity Comic Creation Support Project

Hello, Forest Goodluck features surreal life forms like Raph, a forest spirit born from tree sap; Tree Killer, a genetically modified humanoid robot; and plastic monsters created from plastic waste and volcanic eruptions. Each of these beings, whether created by humans or mutated due to environmental pollution, symbolizes pressing environmental issues we must address.

Author Jeong Hyeon-jin conceived this work hoping to inspire readers to care more for Earth’s environment. She studied documentaries, films, books, and news about environmental issues worldwide, selecting the most critical topics to address. To make these complex subjects accessible and engaging, she chose to express them through the medium of comics. This effort led to the work being selected for the 2021 Korea Manhwa Content Agency Diversity Comic Creation Support Project, generating significant anticipation. With its thrilling adventures, unpredictable conflicts, and an epic narrative of reconciliation and forgiveness, the story keeps readers eagerly turning pages. This masterpiece immerses everyone in a compelling tale from which they won’t want to look away.
