Description
Li Yuankong, the former commander of the Night Owls, fled the martial world under the alias Ying Rushi after failing to protect the pseudo-dynasty’s founding emperor, Jiang Dingkun, during an assassination at Lingshan Palace four years ago. The only clue left at the scene was a four-inch dagger named “Husheng” (Protect Life), with no trace of the killer. He has since secretly pursued the identity and whereabouts of the dagger’s owner. Now disguised as a wandering hero, Ying Rushi investigates the murderer and reunites with the current Night Owls commander, Pei Ji (also known as Pei Sheng), with whom he shares a fraught history. The two engage in a prolonged cat-and-mouse game. As identities shift and truths blur, who is the cat, and who is the mouse?
Four years later, the Husheng dagger resurfaces during a shipwreck treasure robbery. Pei Ji is ordered to investigate and unexpectedly crosses paths with Ying Rushi. The estranged martial brothers reluctantly join forces to solve cases including the theft of Linglong Bones from Sanhua Lodge and the murder of White-Clad Tai Sui at Woyun Manor. Along the way, they encounter Yue Lianqing, the sole survivor of Yiqing Palace, and Cheng Sushang, a remnant of Cang Mountain, discovering that all these events and people are intricately linked to the Husheng dagger—as if an invisible hand has woven a web ensnaring everyone involved.
As the investigation unfolds, Ying Rushi and Pei Ji gradually uncover each other’s hidden depths. When the truth behind the Husheng dagger emerges, the roles of hunter and prey reverse, masks of good and evil are lifted, and the dagger finally finds a new owner.
