Description

This is a deafening book. The central question to be answered is: why did the scientific revolution take place in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries and not in China? The popular answers to this question have been limited to 'Eurocentrism'. Professor Wen's book, supported by a large amount of hard historical evidence and rigorous argumentation, jumps out of the popular trap of the superiority of Western culture and institutions and adopts the framework of 'state competition' to argue that China did not produce modern science not because it lacked the democracy, freedom and rational thinking of ancient Greece and the Renaissance. Rather, since entering the Great Unification at the end of the Spring and Autumn Warring States period, China no longer faced an environment of sustained state competition, so there was a lack of intensive arms race and commercial rivalry among the great powers, and therefore a lack of pressure for deep understanding of the epoch-making questions of ballistic trajectory and combustion and explosion mechanism inevitably raised by thermal weapons warfare. The lack of pressure on intellectuals and the state to confront these questions has prevented the creation and government support of scientific communities for the systematic study of these questions. This book is a wake-up call. It is not only the author's conclusions that have completely refreshed our understanding of the myth of the scientific revolution, but also the convincing evidence and the coherence of the argumentation on the problem.
