Feature
★ This book is the “companion piece” and unique echo to the phenomenal million-copy bestselling nonfiction work, Return to the Wolf Pack. While the original moved the world from the perspective of the human “mom,” Li Weiyi, this book narrates the same legendary tale for the first time from the first-person perspective of the wolf, Green. It is both a courageous coming-of-age story for young adults and a profound parable that prompts adults to re-examine life and freedom.
★ The documentary film Return to the Wolf Pack, adapted from the original work, won the “Best Asian Production Award” and maintains a stellar 9.6/10 rating on major streaming platforms. In January 2026, this story of love and freedom triggered a renewed emotional tsunami on platforms like TikTok a decade later, with a single video garnering over 7 million likes and related hashtag views surpassing 2.8 billion!
★ As an ecological conservation miracle recognized as the “world’s first successful case of a human-raised wolf reintegrating into a wild population,” Green's story has been included in the World Animal Protection “Cross-Species Ethics” research case library, becoming a key reference for the “companion-style rewilding” strategy in international wildlife conservation. This grants the work solid scientific and social value.
★ Caught between the warmth of “being loved” and the call of his “wild” nature, Green spends his entire life searching for an answer. His struggles and choices resonate with the soul of Jack London's The Call of the Wild, posing a timeless question to every modern heart: Why are we born, and how do we remain true to our authentic selves?

Description
A young wolf cub, orphaned and surviving a poacher's raid, finds himself in the human world. Living among humans, he witnesses urban civilization and its rules, but his unrestrained wolf nature gradually reawakens. Yearning for innate freedom, the wolf cub chooses to endure life's trials, constantly facing challenges and tests from the animal kingdom, resolutely refusing human provision and taming, while relentlessly questioning, “Who am I?” Through his growth, he comes to a profound understanding of the “way of the wolf,” ultimately returning to the wilderness and rejoining his pack.
Key Excerpt:
The wolf pack was over there, and I was here, separated by mountains.
Mom cupped my face in her hands. She seemed to have so much to say, yet the words caught in her throat. She only asked softly, “Mom won't be able to see you anymore, will she?”
Looking into Mom's eyes, I didn't know what to say. I only felt waves of ache in my heart, a sudden surge of warmth welling up, blurring my vision. I'd grown this big, survived so many life-and-death trials, and never cried. But now, tears streamed down.
Mom was my ferryman in the mortal world, the only human I ever yearned for. We had clapped hands in the sunlight, embraced in seas of grass, let our eyes grow misty in swirling snowstorms, and howled freely atop Wolf Mountain. We caught fish together, chased rabbits, admired the view on hillsides, blew dandelion seeds into the sunset, and also huddled together hungry and cold… I could never do these things with her again. For so long, within me, the sense of belonging to my species and the identity of being part of humanity clashed violently. Mom, the wind is rising. This little dandelion must begin his journey.
Author
A Chinese wildlife painter and writer. Her artistic career and personal destiny were utterly transformed by a wolf named “Green.”
In 2010, she rescued the orphaned wolf cub “Green” on the Ruoergai grasslands and, over several years, personally led and meticulously documented the entire process of successfully rewilding and reintroducing him to a wolf pack. This pioneering achievement was officially recognized as a “world-first” and has become a landmark case in international wildlife conservation.
This extraordinary experience led to her representative nonfiction work, Return to the Wolf Pack. The documentary film of the same name, based on this true story, won international awards including the “Best Asian Production Award.” The commemorative documentary series released in 2021 achieved an exceptionally high rating of 9.6/10 on the Youku platform. Her writing blends the authenticity of a firsthand witness, the acute observation of a painter, and deep humanistic concern. Her work The Story Behind “Return to the Wolf Pack” received the Chinese Outstanding Publications Award.
Through this unique human-wolf legend, Li Weiyi has significantly reshaped public perception of wolves and continues to spark profound global discussion on ecological ethics, the freedom of life, and the true definition of love.
