"Big Stone’s Home", "Yeongmi's Home", "Bambi's Home", and "Mary's Home"
Description
"Big Stone's Home": This is the first work in the series, telling the story of Big Stone and his family - his father who often loses his temper, his hearing-impaired grandfather, his mother who ran away from home, and his adopted little sister “Yeongmi”. The emergence of the "new mother" brought positive changes to the family. She not only changed the family atmosphere, but also helped family members find the motivation to change themselves.
"Yeongmi's Home ": This work focuses on Yeongmi, who was adopted into a childless family and later returned to her original family. The book explores themes of family, belonging, and identity, and describes deeply of Yeongmi's relationship with her family, including her new mother. By showing the interactions and conversations between family members, it explores the true meaning of family.
"Bambi’s Home": Big Stone and Yeongmi had a younger brother Bambi. Big Stone and Yeongmi experienced changes and conflicts among family members. Yeongmi was jealous of the birth of her younger brother Bambi because she felt that family's love and attention had been taken away from her. However, as time passed, Yeongmi began to understand and accept the new member of the family, while also growing psychologically. Family members were trying to adapt to the new family structure and showed positive changes in the process. A crisis caused by a typhoon tested the family's cohesion, but in the end they overcame the difficulties through unity and mutual support, which has left readers with a profound impression of family bonds and personal growth.
"Mary's Home": This work explores the themes of identity and belonging through the perspective of the protagonist Mary. Mary, a child born and raised in Korea. Because of her Nepali parents, she often felt that she was neither fully Korean nor fully Nepali. Through Mary's story, the author did not portray children of immigrant background and their families in a negative or sympathetic manner, but focuses on the emotions and challenges experienced by individuals as members of society.
The work also shows the connection and unity between people from different backgrounds, such as Yeongmi, Mary and her mother Limaro. Although they come from different countries and generations, they find each other's support and belonging in Chestnut Village. This connection across borders and generations provides a warm home for everyone.
The entire story emphasizes the power and importance of community, as well as the courage and growth of each individual in their journey to find their own identity.
