Description

In this book, Lee follows a day of "Hoon," an ordinary middle school student, and looks into 24 recent issues of the modern science hidden in his daily life. The book tells different stories that Hoon experiences, naturally engaging readers' interest. At the chapter of ham and juice on the breakfast table, the author tells about issues related with processed foods. At another chapter of CCTV in the elevator, relationship with the modern science and privacy issues is examined. In the episode of Hoon's friend whose voice breaks earlier than other boys, the problem of sexual precocity caused by exposures to endocrine disruptors is discussed. A variety of data and examples are also given to deliver enough background information to understand each scientific issue. And the author explains hidden side effects or newly emerging issues of the modern science in details.

Latest Scientific Issues: Food for Thought for Teens
This book provides teenagers with various food for thought by presenting 24 latest scientific issues including teenagers' game addiction, abnormal climate due to global warming, depletion of fossil fuels and development of renewable energy. Today, science is closely intertwined with the economy, politics, society, ethics and more areas to bring about discussions and debates. The author says studying science is very much related to "thinking well," the most human behavior. In other words, stories of science that is already engaged deeply in our lives enable readers to develop capabilities of rational thinking and logical judgement. While contemplating 24 science issues raised by this book and setting their own thoughts and opinions, readers will improve scientific insights as well as creative and comprehensive thinking.

From Science Technology to Science Ethics, Easier and Interesting Science Stories Found in Our Daily Lives
Problems caused by science and technology, for example, development of military weapons, such as atomic bombs, and environmental pollution, are having an effect across society, not confined to the science area. Thus, there is a growing need for the entire members of society who enjoy fruits of science to understand science and technology correctly and to proactively respond to ethical and other problems accompanied with science research.
This book not only gives knowledge on the latest science and technology such as stem cell research, development of renewable energy, controversies over vaccine and harmful effects of endocrine disruptors, but also allows readers to think about how to understand and deal with a number of ethical problems raised by the development of science technology. With various examples such as the eugenics-based horrors of the Holocaust, the market-oriented companies hidden in science to advertise mild cigarettes and alcohol, and the inconvenient truth that the development of technology does not guarantee happiness for all, this book helps readers naturally pay attention to science and technology issues of the modern society
