Review

Known as a qualified science popular picture book of the Yangtze River, its words and pictures can bring out the best of each other. Mr. Liu, who is a 93 years old geology professor, perfectly combines nature and humanity in his 60 years of fieldwork and presents into excitingly and poetic words in the book, telling a story of the Yangtze River for children and adults vividly under a broad perspective. Li Zanqian, the top Chinese young painter, is good at realistic artworks. The magnificent and intriguing hand-drawn pictures created by her brushes, unfold like a scroll and indicate different geography and urban landscapes in all streams and therefore, presenting this powerful and beautiful scenes of the Chinese Mother River into people’s hearts.

More surprisingly, this book specializes in appreciation, collection and function. The special design that makes the introduction pages into folders gives an access for readers to clearly know about the relations between branches of the Yangtze River, without being confused by the vast geographic information. These devoted nature and humanity hand-drawn pictures suggest super rich knowledge, which is the most powerful thing to learn about its civilization.
--Editors’ Choice

I was born by the Yangtze River, and grown up with the Song of the Yangtze River and the TV programme of the Story of the Yangtze River, but I didn’t have a understanding of the Yangtze River in its entirety until I was middle-aged. I envy the children these days because they can get a glimpse of its grandeur, diversity and poetry.
