Description

We constantly feel restlessness, fear, sometimes anguish, and a seething of emotions that force the mind to work hard without respite. Yet each one of us also possesses, deep inside, the explosive force needed to solve the knotty problem of the nagging questions that torment existence and aim at the ideal that has been called by different names down the centuries: God, Tao, Dharma or Holy Spirit, or love, good or wisdom. In this new stage on his philosophical pathway, Vito Mancuso argues that a balance between the irrationality of love and the pure logic of the mind is still possible: to prove this, he summons the lives and experiences of greats of the present and the past – from Dante to Hannah Arendt, from Giordano Bruno to Etty Hillesum – in an imaginary pantheon of minds in love, capable of conquering the grace that is the fruit of every spiritual education. Setting out from their luminous example, Mancuso shows the way to listen to the inner teacher that each one of us guards inside, and to achieve a state of happy existence that is at once pure and real, dreaming but with open eyes, that represents the greatest gift we can receive from life.

Author

Vito Mancuso is a philosopher and theologian. His books have enjoyed considerable public acclaim. His works have sold more than five hundred thousand copies and prompted much debate in the press, on television and the radio. Mancuso’s views have triggered significant controversy and are often at odds with the ecclesiastic authorities on both ethical and strictly dogmatic levels. He is a columnist for the national daily newspaper La Repubblica. His books published by Garzanti include: Il principio passione - La forza che ci spinge ad amare (The Passion Principle – The Force That Leads to Love, 2013, 6 editions); Io amo – Piccola filosofia dell’amore (I Love – A Small Philosophy of Love, 2014, 5 editions); Dio e il suo destino (God and his Destiny, 2015 – 2 editions); Il coraggio di essere liberi (The Courage To Be Free, 2016 – 45,000 copies sold, 5 editions); Il bisogno di pensare (The Need To Think, 2017 – 90,000 copies); La via della bellezza (The Way of Beauty, 2018 – 55,000 copies sold).
