Review
— Yu Wenzheng
A book about cats, a book whispering the musings of feline masters—amid a world gone wild with chaos, it emits an elegant, playful voice.
— Lian Mingwei
Trauma and healing, setbacks and recovery—it’s a Möbius strip, an endless loop where one can only move forward. Perhaps having no answer is the best answer, because only then will I keep pondering: which is easier to be happy, a human or a cat?
— Zhu Guozhen
Feature
★ Told entirely from the cat’s first-person perspective, the story uses the firm, decisive “Meow” in response to all “that woman’s” questions—capturing a genuine, unique love between cat and human.
★ Illustrated by devoted cat-lover and artist Cat-Sheep, who brings Yiyi’s world to life, portraying the heartfelt, chaotic exchanges between a proud, homebody cat and her absurdly devoted human.
Description
I like to nap on the balcony, listening to the wind, watching the sunlight.
I like to fight with dinosaurs, snatch fish from the table, and explore big boxes.
I live with my most beloved “pet.”
She gives me cans and toys, gives me baths, and does somersaults for me.
She turns cat treats into ghostly dishes and sheds tears over chicken feet.
She says “I love you” every day, but every day she leaves me.
So the thing I do best is wait.
Waiting for the sun to move from east to west,
Waiting for the stars to emerge, for footsteps to draw near,
Waiting for those hands to gently pull out the key and open the door,
Waiting for her to repeat those same words dozens of times a day:
“Yiyi! Baby! I love you!”
Perhaps this really was written by a cat. Watching over “that woman’s” cluttered little nest, observing her dressing, shopping, dieting, dyeing her hair, discussing politics, love, work—watching her life, her liveliness, her loneliness… truly bewildering…
This must have been written by a cat—responding with a firm, resolute “Meow” to all “that woman’s” questions.
Author
A graduate of the Department of Chinese Literature at Tsing Hua University in Taiwan, she holds an MFA from Dong Hwa University. She is the first writer in history to win both the Poetry First Prize and the Essay First Prize in the Lin Rong San Literary Awards in consecutive years. In 2013, she won the Best Screenplay Award at the “Shoot Taipei” film competition and was named in the Asia Weekly Top Ten Chinese Novels. She has worked as a university lecturer, columnist, and radio host.
Her published works include: The Righteousness of Gu, The Way of Desire, Half a Mother, Half a Daughter, Fantastical Cooking, Central Community, Three Days, and The Woman Who Must Have a Long Island Iced Tea Every Night.
This book is her tribute to the “first cat” in her life—unique, like first love, stirring tears but even more so, sweetness. Every word is love. Because with a cat, each day is a good day.
Cat-Sheep (Illustrator)
She adopted her first cat, “Bibi”—a blue-eyed, blue-gray colorpoint longhair—while studying at Taipei National University of the Arts, sparking her inspiration to draw cats. Over time, she took in more cats, eventually caring for over thirteen felines at home and outdoors. She finds creative inspiration in observing cats’ artistic tendencies in daily life and believes every cat is a unique character.
She founded the brand “Cat-Sky,” has held multiple solo exhibitions, created murals and cat figurines for Houtong Cat Village, and designed co-branded cat merchandise. She lives with her cats on Planet Cat XP27.
