Review

“As an educator and mother of five children (the author) manages to convey a complicated topic in a child-friendly manner. The lively illustrations underline the cheerful tone of the picture book as well as the message. It reads: Respect everyone for who they are - it could be the beginning of a great friendship. "
—— Beatrix Fricke in the Berliner Morgenpost (November 18, 2017)

"A helpful book for parents, educators and children."
—— Ellen Nieswiodek-Martin in Lydia magazine

Description

“I am Lotte. And that's Mia. We go to the same kindergarten. Mia is a little different. Sometimes I can't understand her and sometimes she doesn't understand me. So I watch her very closely and learn how Mia really is.

Mia is special. And she is great! - Mia is especially great! And that's why Mia is my very special friend.”

--- ---

This story helps to better understand the behavior and feelings of children who are different - which is sometimes not that easy. She teaches the very little ones how nice it can be to discover others and to accept them for who they are. In this way, children of kindergarten age learn to deal with special children and to integrate them calmly into their community.

Age-appropriate and situation-oriented, without judgment or fear, this book explains.

Mia's specialty is her early childhood autism. She doesn't speak. The term “autism” does not appear in the story, but is explained in the appendix.
