Description

The Trans-Siberian, the Orient Express, the Train to the Clouds, the Al Andalus, the Blue Train, the Glacier Express, the Maharajas Express, the Tea Train, the Royal Canadian Pacific, embody as no other means of transport the romanticism of the journey and the magic of the journey. Loves, conspiracies, crimes, expeditions, literature, cinema, communication. On its rails slips the memory of the exploits of other eras, tales of legend or the recent passion of Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory. From the Guttenberg press, the greatest invention to interconnect and evolve societies.

How were the beginnings of the railroad? Is it true that Leonardo da Vinci devised the first machine capable of moving without resorting to the force of an animal? What does the word train mean? Who inaugurated the first underground transport line? How was the first steam locomotive in the American continent? And what was the first line that was laid on Spanish soil?

The origin of the railway could be traced back to the Egyptian civilization and the Greco-Roman era, but it will be in the sixteenth century when the German miners, to haul the ore, used rough wagons. After the discovery of the steam engine by Watt, in 1770, the first locomotive, in England, was built to transport travelers. Almost a century later, in 1830, the first railway line in the world was inaugurated, linking Liverpool with Manchester. From then on, the modern era of the railroad is already running on wheels in the five continents, with its consequent impact on politics, economy and social dynamics. Rail lines quickly began to be established in other countries: USA, France, Belgium, Canada, Italy or Germany. In Spain it would not be until 1848, with the so-called Carril de Barcelona to Mataró, when the first line was established, having previously built (1837) in the then Spanish province of Cuba the railroad between Havana and Bejucal.
