Review

"He encapsulates all senses in his painting allowing the experiences and adventures to be immortalized. Inspired by travel and discovery, he brings his views onto the canvas. Lietti immerses himself into the process through different in-depth stages of elements, layers and colors. His works are featured in private collections worldwide and his exhibition at the Taipa-Houses Museum provides a glimpse to a life akin to a kaleidoscope."

Five great Hong Kong artists
"On first visiting Hong Kong in 2005, Italian-born artist Lietti was struck by the mesmerising colours and vivid sensations of the city – and found himself immediately inspired to capture those experiences on canvas, before making Hong Kong his home a year later. “I instantly fell in love with the place,” Lietti reminisces, a passion that is clearly visible in his vibrantly-hued renditions of the city’s skyline and harbour. Usually painted in acrylic and oils, his work often features collage elements that add texture and depth (including pieces from local magazines and newspapers that reinforce each work’s connection to place), with a trademark final finish of glossy resin to further enhance the brightness of his colours. A frequent exhibitor at the Asia Contemporary Art Show, Lietti has also collaborated with Hong Kong students to create murals at local schools." --The Landmark Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong

"Francesco Lietti has been living in Hong Kong since early 2006 and his love of this vibrant, eclectic city is immediately apparent in his works, which derives from the mnemonic imagery of the artist, who lives in symbiosis with the themese of travel and discovery."

"When I think of a Francesco Lietti painting, I think of color. Gloriously vibrant, and often eclectic in choice, the architect turned artist has a knack for translating the energy and essence of cities and landscapes into wondrous multi-color. The result is striking to say the least." (Jess Ng Nonagon Style)

Description

The moment Francesco set foot in Asia was the first time he was absorbed by the vibrancy, the energy, and the beauty of its people, landscapes, and cityscapes. The amount of possibilities, stories, and adventures seemed limitless and ready for him to plunge into and explore: the aromas, tastes, and colors were almost inebriating.

Painting is a fluid act allows Francesco to re-live certain experiences and adventures, many of which are related to travel and discovery. After digesting these experiences he brings them to life, almost subliminally, onto the canvas. The composition, the choice of colors, and the key elements of the painting begin to appear. Francesco relaxes into the process and refines what’s already there, layer-by-layer, element-by-element, color-by-color, until the memory of the place, the adventure, is brought to life.

In The Colors of Asia, Francesco Lietti documents a collection of his works while providing behind-the-scenes insights into the making of his paintings: the inspiration, the technique, the experiences, and the passion. Pairing short memoirs with his inspired images, the reader gets to see the process of art with the finished piece. Francesco has also invited a few friends, fellow artists, and colleagues working in the art field to write pieces about his work so that he might have the chance to learn something about himself and his work through the eyes of others.

Francesco Lietti
Francesco Lietti has been living in Hong Kong since early 2006 and his love for the vibrant, eclectic city is immediately apparent in his work, which derives from the mnemonic imagery of the artist, who lives in symbiosis with the themes of travel and discovery. When first visiting Hong Kong in the summer of 2005, the painter experienced an overwhelming sensation: fascinated by the variety of colors, the rich smells, and the plethora of images he was drawn to return and stay. “This exciting metropolis is something you cannot just put into a frame: something would spill out; something would be missing; one can catch the details, but he or she would never be able to capture the entire picture.” The artist portrays this through simple and direct forms. He paints naïve visions that often have a humorous quality, describing the city in an almost caricatured magnificence. Through the use of striking colors the painter captures the essence of Hong Kong’s famous harbor skyline and makes it his own. His paintings hover between reality and fantasy. Using strong blocks of paint to represent the buildings, Lietti also includes smaller patches of textured color, which dance across the cityscape, giving it that dream-like, ephemeral quality. The artist works in acrylic and oils on canvas and also adds collage to give his paintings texture and depth. He then finishes his pieces with a thick, glossy resin, further enhancing the brightness of the colors. Lietti also captures the colors and delights of other Asian destinations. The lush greens of Vietnam and Bali, the golden sunsets of Rajasthan and the deep blue seascapes of the Philippines―these are just some of the many places he has visited and experienced. The artist gives us rare glimpses of merging reality with a magical world. Francesco was born in Lecco on the southern shore of Lake Como in Italy. He studied architecture in Milan and furthered his studies in Paris at the École des Beaux Arts, La Seine, and also at the Clerkenwell College of Printing in London. His works are featured in private collections worldwide.
