Review

This clever counting book will delight young children, who will chuckle when they see what the funny looking birds on the pages get up to. At the back of the book the author offers us some tips on how to make counting the birdies fun. --Through the Looking Glass Review

Jungle Gym and Dirty Birdies, written and illustrated by Jennifer Sattler, are sure to be hits with emerging readers and toddlers. With bright, colorful illustrations and simple, short blurbs of text, children and adults will enjoy reading these clever books. Both books feature adorable animals in funny situations and lots of new words for the youngest readers. With opposites and counting at the forefront of these books, little ones will learn new concepts and words without even realizing it. Board books are great for introducing children to reading and to new ideas, and these two books will not disappoint. Highly recommended for children ages 2-5.
5 stars for five dirty birdies and all their jungle pals! --Kizzi Roberts, Three Show Saturday Blog

Part counting book, part tribute to messy good times, Sattler’s exuberant board book introduces five goofy-looking, none-too-clean birds. A long-legged, polka-dotted bird can’t resist a muddy puddle; it then heads indoors where a tiny green duck is going wild with purple paint (“1 dirty birdie meets 1 painting birdie”). More birds arrive, they get cleaned up (after a communal bath, they’re dried off by industrial fans that leave them fluffier than ever), but all five are soon right back in the mud. Closing questions for readers encourage additional counting (“How many blue dirty birdies are there?”), emphasizing the concepts that underlie this giggly tale. Simultaneously available: Jungle Gym. Up to age 5. --Publishers Weekly--
