Review

“... The text is rich in information, excursions highlighted in color, for example on composers, singers and technical terms convey further knowledge. Selected well-balanced - both in the temporal context and thematically - is the really beautiful picture material. The time tables at the end are also very useful. A work I can recommend. " (Heidi Debschütz, in: ekz-Informationsdienst, issue 27, 2019)

Description

Since its beginnings a good 400 years ago, opera, the most elaborate of all art forms, has fascinated people and moved societies. This richly illustrated volume presents the opera in all its facets: A history of opera with the masterpieces by Monteverdi, Handel, Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, Strauss, Puccini, Nono and many others is offered here as well as insights into the opera business at the small ones and large houses with their dramaturges, stage designers, directors, directors, musicians and singers from Farinelli to Cecilia Bartoli, and last but not least the audience. The stylistic diversity of operas in the 20th and 21st centuries is also described in detail.
