【Description】
Arrigo is a 14th-century merchant. After travelling all over Europe buying and selling books, he moves to Rome and opens a workshop where he reproduces texts on miscellaneous subjects. He gives each of his clients a personalised cartouche and invents new typefaces with which he stamps his trademark on the manuscripts he sells. But then, one day one of his unmistakable cartouches is found in a house in which a murder has been committed and he ends up in trouble.
This narrative essay, constructed like a novel, follows the adventures of a modern globetrotter in a journey back in time in which the reader is taken around the Eternal City as it was in the 14th century, with its multifarious neighbourhoods, its social life and its countless perils. This is how Massimo Arcangeli describes communal (and papal) Rome, between work and free time, urban geographies and political line-ups, private vices and public virtues, migratory phenomena and gender issues. It is in this teeming theatre that the daily lives of Arrigo and his relatives unfold, described in atmospheric interiors and exteriors through the rhythms and the craft activities of the various quarters. A guide to social and linguistic history in a hugely enjoyable "bottom-up" reconstruction. Read More
