Description

The tragic chronicle of a world city: Beirut and Lebanon’s destiny
On August 4, 2020, a cataclysmic explosion at the port ravages Beirut: hundreds of thousands of homes destroyed, over 200 lives lost, and thousands injured. Yet this would not be the final catastrophe for a nation battered by perpetual crises. In this work, ten residents narrate their lived experiences in a city that for decades served as the Middle East’s pivotal crossroads. Their stories unfold in the once-glamorous Hamra district or Hezbollah-controlled southern neighborhoods, through perspectives of devout Muslims and atheists, from privileged elites to those battling daily survival.
