Description

People have been preoccupied with ideas of fantastic beings since long ago: The lion man from the Swabian Alb, the human-animal gods from ancient Egypt are just some of these testimonies of our ancestors. From ancient times to modern times, travelers told of dragons, unicorns and basilisks that were said to be native to distant lands. Alleged sightings of werewolves, Nessie or Bigfoot drag on to the present day. These strange creatures have been immortalized across all continents in innumerable pictures, sculptures and stories.
What is behind these mythical beasts and fantastic creatures? Do these strange creatures just spring from our imagination? The zoologist Heinz-Ulrich Reyer takes a biological look at the cultural history of mythical creatures and shows that many mythical creatures surprisingly have real role models. A visually powerful search for traces between myth and reality.
