Review

“With sense of humor, first-hand experience with fifth graders and their interests and a healthy dose of parental guidance, Nenko Genov has created a funny page-turner, which contains the kind of messages that we need so badly nowadays. Without a doubt the warmth and the care, invested by the writer will be highly appreciated by young readers and their parents alike”. – Val Stoeva, Detski Knigi Foundation

“This is not just a modern book, it is a good book. The kind of book that makes you both laugh and cry, and helps you to understand life through a simple, seemingly trivial situation. The plot leads children out of the superficial, the shallow and the fake. And on top of that it is a truly optimistic book. The author’s use of language hits all the right notes. The problems of the 12-year olds, the characteristics of our time, the morals, the eternal relations between people, which not even technology can change… - all of that is addressed here. The final scenes of “Farewell, Diary!” are so human, unostentatious and noble, they turn the book into a great friend and a teacher for the reader.” – Kina Kadreva, writer

“I laughed a lot and had a great fun. “Farewell, Diary!” is highly entertaining, not just for children, but for their parents too. And for their parens’ parents. It is a lighthearted read, an experience to share with the entire family, just like playing board games or riding bikes.” - Hristina Panjaridis, writer

“Farewell, Diary!” is an amazing book in the style of “Diary of a 6th Grade Ninja” and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”. Through the hilarious (and highly constructive) story of a Bulgarian fifth grader Nenko Genov draws our attention to important topics such as family and friendship, protecting the environment, etc. “Farewell, Diary!” is the perfect gift for your kid.” – www.Ucha.Se , educational online community

“The title immediately drew our attention and the book got us hooked in so many ways. The unconventional layout and the witty, fresh word flow made us laugh from page one. The campaign around the book itself covers all areas of interest for young readers. In other words, “Farewell, Diary!” turned out to be the perfect way to celebrate International Children's Book Dday.” – AzCheta.com

Description

"Farewell, diary!" is a contemporary story told in the form of a diary which tells the many misadventures of a snappy Bulgarian fifth grader (who's forced to remain anonymous). He starts the year in a new school, but loses his expensive phone on the first day. The events presented in his diary, Monday (17.09.2018 - the first school day) until Saturday (22.09.2018), are meant to be a proof of his cruel fate in case his parents find out about the missing phone.

We all know that living without a phone nowadays is unthinkable, and if your parents learn that you took it to school, despite the ban on mobile devices there, and on top of everything you lost it... Well, let’s just say that things are getting from bad to worse, and fast! Our hero and his best friend Doncho start investigating the phone’s disappearance and suspect it has been stolen. Through classrooms, canteens, school corridors and neighborhood streets, the investigation takes unexpected turns. And on the way the author of the diary will find out some truths about the important things in life and find new friends ... without even searching for them in Google!

Author

Nenko Genov

I’m 33, born and raised in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, but since 2011 I live in Poland, where my wife is from and where we both work as teachers and raise our two beautiful daughters. My experience as a teacher and a parent, combined with my own childhood memories have been my main source of inspiration while writing "Farewell, Diary!". I’ve graduated a BA in English Philology as well as an MA in Film Arts, both closely connected with my greatest passion – storytelling. Back in Bulgaria I worked in TV for almost five years. I’ve written and directed several short films and even snatched a few awards at international film festivals. But cinema is an expensive and collective art, often connected with a lot of traveling, and since I became a father my agenda to be the next Spielberg has been on hold. However I’ve found another outlet for my creative impulses. I’ve been into writing ever since I remember, and my short stories, articles and screenplays have been featured in a number of Bulgarian magazines, both printed and digital. A few of my short stories and comics have been published in Bulgaria, Poland and the Czech Republic. I’ve also written three plays for children which were performed on stage in Poland in 2016, 2017 and 2018. One of them, “The Pirate Princess”, was part of “Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy” – an annual nation-wide campaign, the biggest charity event in Poland. Currently I’m collaborating with an illustrator on turning “The Pirate Princess” into a picture book.
