Nature is a very complex system of invisible interactions and whenever a person interferes with it, can produce unpredictable effect. This book is about entertaining stories involving natural and bizarre events caused by human beings: a collection of historical events that took place in several parts of the world at different periods, but mostly still unknown in all their implications and developments.

An interesting and pleasant reading for becoming aware about the delicate equilibrium between nature and human beings, which involves anything and anyone.

The author, a well-known science writer with an ironical narration style, is capable of engaging young reader’s attention through exciting episodes about the natural world complete of scientific data and historical facts.

======================================================================

When English settlers planted their native apple varieties in America 400 years ago, flocks of fruit flies fell over the fruits and destroyed the harvest. Many poisons have been tried to combat the plague. But instead of the fruit flies other insects died, then birds and later even red deer. Only a trick with artificial apples made of salt dough and chili solved the problem.

The Italian ecologist and insect researcher Gianumberto Accinelli explains such intricate interrelationships in a child-friendly way and with a refreshing pinch of humour. It shows what domino effects occur when the natural balance is destroyed, for example in the triumphal march of American vine phylloxera in Europe or the rabbit glut in Australia.

Accinelli emphasizes the importance of being careful with nature, as many species are closely interwoven with human life. In bizarre stories, magically illustrated by Serena Viola, they come alive: Spiders, who serve as world travellers of technical inspiration, carrier pigeons, who can save lives thanks to their sense of orientation, pigs and honeybees, who feed us. This great non-fiction book sensitizes young readers to the interrelationships in nature by combining ecology and history.
